The Center for Security Studies (KEMEA) has been established as the Greek Ministry of Public Order and Citizen Protection think tank on security policies. KEMEA is a scientific, consulting and research agency, whose purpose is to conduct theoretical and applied research and to produce studies, particularly at a strategic level, on issues concerning security policies. KEMEA also provides advisory and consulting services to the Ministry and other Public and Private authorities on these issues. KEMEA up to now has been participating in many funded Projects of the FP7, DG HOME and ESA. It has represented the Greek Government to the European Research and Innovation Forum (ESRIF) of the European Commission and is a Member to the Board of Directors of the European Organization for Security (EOS). KEMEA has been appointed in 2011 (Presidential Decree No39/06.05.2011) as the “National Contact Point” for the protection of European Critical Infrastructures (“EPCIP contact point”) in compliance of Directive 114/2008. KEMEA has extensive experience in identifying end user needs /operational needs and requirements and transforming them into system requirements. Over the course of the years and different national and European research projects and studies, KEMEA has identified critical omissions, essential additions and introduction of innovative features in novel solutions. Through KEMEAs’ involvement in the design, implementation and delivery of highly focused training programmes for Law Enforcement Agents,’s and Security Personnel of various Critical Infrastructures and Private Sector Security PersonelPersonnel, valuable knowledge and experience have been extracted and successfully used to consolidate proper training modules and innovative applications.

The Cyprus Neuroscience & Technology Institute is a non-profit, non-Governmental independent Organization active in programs with future orientation in areas related to human brain-modern technology-social transformation and the repercussions of relevant research for humanity. It has the following operating units:

The New Media in Learning Laboratory, active in both research and social intervention, runs experimental projects that aim to develop new theories of learning, new IT-rich and mobile-based curricula, technologies to assess the role of emotions, attention and mental states in learning, and to integrate state of the art technologies (computers, IT, mobile phone) in the educational context.

The Civil Society and Future Affairs Unit develops and implements programs that aim the development of a responsible and active civil society. Specific projects focus in capacity building, peace-related process in Cyprus, facilitation of communication and understanding between people in conflicting societies, public debates about human rights, transparency, safer use of Internet, extending European citizenship in the Southern parts of Europe, youth participation etc. It organizes seminars, workshops, trainings and conferences to promote its social-intervention aims.

The Technology For Peace Unit develops theory on how technology can and must be used in the service of peace. More specifically, it develops educationally relevant and socially responsible IT & Mobile-based curriculum, and. It participates in various international and European organizations and through its Development Education program aims to contribute towards bridging the literacy, economic and digital divides in our world.

The University of Piraeus was founded in 1938 under the title of the “School for Industrial Studies”, by the Industrialists and Tradesmen Association. Today, the following nine Departments are run by the University of Piraeus: i) Economics, ii) Business Administration, iii) Statistics and Insurance Science, iv) Financial Management and Banking, v) Industrial Management, vi) Maritime Studies, vii) Informatics, viii) Digital Systems and ix) International and European Studies.

The Department of Digital Systems was established in 1999 as one of the newest academic departments at the University of Piraeus, in response to the societal demand for higher education academic teaching and research that support the Knowledge Society. The department covers (through the curricula and the academic research conducted) important areas of the widely and rapidly developing field of Digital Science and Technology.

Driven by the evolution of the e-business area, in 2008, the department invested on the organization of a new Postgraduate Degree Programme, on “Digital Systems Security”, and the assembly of a research laboratory the Systems Security Laboratory (SSL). SSL paves the way for the realization of a secure and trustworthy digital society focusing on the areas of Network Security, Wireless and Mobile Communications Security, Intrusion Detection Systems, Trust and Security Management, Web Security, Formal Methods for the Analysis and Design of Cryptographic Protocols, Hardware and Software Reverse Engineering, Privacy Enhancing Technologies, Digital Forensic, Legal and Regulatory issues in Data and Privacy Protection, Security and Privacy Economics, Medical Informatics Security and Privacy, and Risk Assessment Methodologies.
